A Simple and Elegant Response to Ireland’s Housing Crisis

Robert Tolan has taken a gap year - supported by Emergent Ventures - to tackle Ireland’s housing crisis. One of Robert’s key contentions is that housing is a regulatory issue because locals don’t have the incentive to build or let build.

The suggestion:

• Allow home owners to vote on whether their entire street can be redeveloped (e.g. add new houses/apartments).

• If a supermajority (e.g. 66%) vote in favour, then redevelopment happens.

• Homeowners benefit (because they own or can sell all or part of the redeveloped properties).
